So you want to RP in Wildstar?

If you’ve made it this far and you’re new to the community, welcome to Wildstar! The purpose of this thread is to give some helpful advice and tips on how to build characters, look for roleplay, advertise events, and give a brief rundown of the game’s current lore situations. What this guide will NOT do is tell someone what they “can” or “cannot” do, nor will it attempt to shoehorn anybody into a specific race, faction, or server. The very core of roleplaying is making and playing a character that you enjoy, so this guide is here to help you make the most of it!

Lore Cliffnotes

q8r0n0L.png

The current year is 1667 AE.

You and your companions have been in a decades-long space war with the Dominion, jumping from planet to planet in a fleet of rusty ships and narrowly avoiding death time and time again. Your friends come from many different planets and star-systems.

  • The Granok, a strong, rock-like race.
  • The Aurin, a small and scrappy race of humanoids with animal-like features.
  • The Mordesh, a plague-ridden race of elves kept alive and sane only by the vitalus in their tanks.
  • The Exile humans, a hardy and rambunctious lot who were once a part of the very Dominion you are now running from.

The famed human explorer Dorian Walker has recently found the fabled planet Nexus; The supposed homeworld of the Eldan, a race of humanoids that the Dominion worship like Gods. Perhaps they ARE Gods. With their incredible intellect and technology, it wouldn’t be such a far stretch to consider that they may have made every other race that ever existed in their trek across multiple galaxies.

But that’s neither here nor there. For now, you are tasked with assisting the now settled Nexus with its never ending woes. Between the endless war with the Dominion, space pirates looking to claim their stake in the Nexus, and a deadly plague known only as the Strain that consumes everything it touches, the squirg that attach to their victims and take over their minds, and the Ascendancy that augments its users until they become a mindless hive, you’re likely to need a lot of help if you intend to stay alive here.

Fortunately, you aren’t alone in your journey. As you adventure across the Nexus, you will run into many important faces who will guide your travels, and in turn you will learn about their histories and motivations. Some of those characters include:

Queen Myala Everstar - Queen of the Aurin. She is often seen with her first consort Arwick Redleaf. She is often in poor health due to the crown she wears, fashioned from the world tree on their planet of Arboria. As the tree suffers and dies, so does she. She bears this pain willingly, however, as to take off the crown would symbolize that she has given up on her planet and her people; to the queen, a fate worse than death.

Victor Lazarin - A once universe-renowned Mordesh alchemist who nearly invented an elixir that would give its user eternal life, he quickly fell from grace as the elixir went bad and instead doomed his entire planet to a zombie apocalypse. He now works tirelessly under the watchful eyes of Avra Darkos to create the cure that may save his people from extinction. He is often found working alongside his daughter, Lucy Lazarin.

Durek Stonebreaker - The leader of the original Exiles and current commander of FCON (Free Companies of Nexus), Durek was exiled from his homeland along with all Granok currently seen in-game. He is a brash leader who makes dangerous decisions that often lead to disastrous consequences while on the Nexus. He is often seen arguing with Sergeant Kara over military matters.

Dorian Walker - The famed Exile human explorer responsible for discovering the Nexus. He now travels across the entire planet’s surface, competing with the Cassian human Artemis Zin to document and discover new species and resources for the Exiles.

Belle Walker - The daughter of Dorian Walker and very much his protegee in every way, she is often seen trawling through the Nexus’ many Exo-Labs with her companion bots Rusty and Bolt. Wherever she goes, trouble always seems to follow, so prepare for a fight!

Deadeye Brightland - Aron "Deadeye" Brightland is an infamous Exile gun-for-hire that made a name for himself in the wild, unmapped regions of space beyond the Fringe. Though he is the last living descendant of the famed Exile hero who led the first rebellion against the Cassians, he is no rebel leader - but rather a steely-eyed gunman with a grim sense of humor. He is often found with his dog Grim.

Welcome to Nexus, cupcake!
So those are some of my thoughts from the bathtub.

Character Themes
With the majority of our game’s races still left in cryosleep at the beginning of the game, it’s safe to assume that you were important enough to wake up and send on this grand journey that few will have the opportunity to see until the war is over. Your options are nearly endless, but here are a few ideas and suggestions to get you started with your ultimate decision.

Mercenary - the ultimate catch-all profession. You are traveling the Nexus on someone else’s dime, likely killing your way towards a happy lifestyle someday somewhere on a skyplot far away from the war.

Scientist
- The Nexus is filled to the brim with technologies and species never before seen anywhere else in the galaxy, and you’re lucky enough to be here to document ALL of it! Perhaps you’ll find something unprecedented. Science can be broken down into a number of categories from Grismaran alchemy to botany and everything in-between.

Explorer - Dorian Walker ain’t the only explorer on this planet. He’s only one man, after all! A little adventure never scared you and there are more than a few exo-labs and caves left that nobody’s been in before, so get out there and start mapping!

Doctor - Let’s face it. When you’re living on a planet where everything wants to kill you, you’re going to get a few bumps and bruises, and a broken leg or two... Or three. Fortunately those silly soldiers and mercenaries have YOU to patch them up.

Soldier - While FCON is not a “military” in the formal sense, it still requires volunteers to operate and keep the Nexus safe from the Dominion and all other forces looking to annihilate you and everyone else who has set foot here.

Settler - If we intend to stay on the Nexus for the long term, we need to create towns and living spaces for the citizens that will eventually populate the planet. Your job is to find those livable spaces and build them up into something that all can use. Make sure those houses are sturdy - you never know when a big bad wolf will come along and try to blow it down!

Black Hoods - Lead by “The Widow” Avra Darkos, the Hoods are the Exile’s primary intelligence organization. If spy games, assassinations, and sneaky tactics appeal to you, this may be your ticket. Just don’t tell anybody who you are - wouldn’t want to blow your cover!

Consort/Matria - While Queen Myala and Arwick are THE Matria and Consort, there are a number of other Aurin communities scattered over the Nexus in need of leadership and guidance from a responsible person like you. Matrias commune with nature and perform weddings and funeral rights for their clans. Consorts act as the right hand to the Matria and provide support to her. It should be noted that Matrias are strictly female, but consorts can be of any gender.

Judge - It's not easy to be the law in a lawless world, but that's your job; to keep the peace and make sure those darned kids get along in the sandbox. You can work on your own or among a group of friendlies, but just remember; you are the judge, the jury, AND the executioner. Use that power wisely if you don't want to end up hunted yourself!

Finding Roleplay
IC/OOC channels
Since we’re now all living on the same PvE server together with limited addons for communication, several channels have been designated for the community to use to find each other and organize events and every-day roleplay. All channels can be accessed by typing /chjoin (name). I.E.: /chjoin WSRP.

  • WSRP - The roleplay catch-all that allows roleplayers to chat OOCly and meet one another. Topics vary wildly and are not always Wildstar related. Events are often advertised here.
  • LFRP - If you’re looking for event advertisement or to ask questions about the game’s lore or roleplay without the off-topic chatter, this is your channel.
  • GlobalRadio - An IC (in-character) radio used to communicate with other characters. The radio can be tuned into via a physical radio receiver, or by datachron app.

Helpful Addons
While our addon scene has been lacking lately, there are a few you can use to improve your experience in roleplay, even if they aren’t specifically RP-related!

  • Killroy/Chatsplitter - both addons serve the same function. Killroy provides the user with an interface, while chatsplitter relies on chat commands only. These addons are used to format roleplay into neat sections.
  • Chatlinks - This addon enables you to copy and paste website links out of the chat-box, but it also allows other players to “ping” your name. Great for busy roleplay settings and alleviating the “chat scroll” that often happens at bars and clubs.
  • This is Me - Addon currently in development that will allow you to write a short description of your character and share it with other players.
  • WSRP Housing Directory - Shows a number of different roleplay-oriented housing plots that a player can visit.

Circles/Guilds: What’s the difference?
If you are a premium member (paid sub), you have access to (1) guild, and (5) circles. If you are unpaid, you will only have access to one guild, and one circle. So what’s the difference?

  • Guilds provide perks when players work together. They have their own symbol and bank, and can provide several different flasks and XP gain increases.
  • Circles come with the rank system of guilds as well as a vanity tag to wear under your name, but do not share their perks or bank. Often roleplayers chose to join a PvE guild with perks, then join several roleplaying circles of varying themes.

Advertising Events
Have an event idea that you’d like to invite players to? Great! There are several methods of doing this, and it is best to use all of them in order to net the largest number of eyes and guarantee the success of your idea.
  • WSRP Forums - You’re already here! Go to the event section of your designated server and faction, and make a post about what you’re doing and who you’re looking for. It is best to advertise about a WEEK in advance here to make sure everyone has seen it.
  • WSRP Discord - Accessible through a link on the main page, this is a chatroom that players can use when they are not in-game. There is an event tab that you can add a short description and link to so that those who don’t use the forums can see it.
  • WSRP/LFRP Channel - It’s safest to advertise between an hour and thirty minutes before your event begins with this. Keep roughly 15 minutes between advertisements to avoid spamming out the conversation.
  • GlobalRadio - If your character can ICly advertise the event, do so here. “Hey guys! My bar is opening in a couple of minutes, come on down! ((plot name))

This guide couldn't have been made without the effort of many players and many sets of eyes, of which I am eternally thankful for. If you helped with this guide in any way and don't see your name, send me a message and you'll be added to the list. (Google docs doesn't tell me who is who!)

Chimer Vesta - Edit/Spoiler suggestions
Lazarus Avismara - Grammar edits/research
Starralon - Dominion editing and writing
Shark/Aiffe/Adhara - Timeline confirmation/compilation
So those are some of my thoughts from the bathtub.
